Byrds Boy
by Bruce J. Robinson

Special Events

March 31 to May 22, 2005

In the Summer of 1988 the son of Admiral Byrd the polar explorer. alone and destitute. was discovered dead in a Baltimore Warehouse. From this slim source Bruce Robinson has fashioned a play about an old homeless man who calls himself Byrd living in a warehouse discovered by Birdie, a black female guard. What ensues is a touching tale of two misfits, bonded by name and loneliness, trying to belong in a fatherless world.

Byrd’s Boy reminds us that the homeless are an extreme manifestation of feelings that haunt all of us. It is the nature of the beast to be lost when without a home. In Byrd’s Boy an obsessed, hallucinatory man and a beleaguered female security guard find themselves trapped by circumstances in the same warehouse. Their mutual rootlessness cultivates a strange and unlikely bond of affection.

Byrd’s Boy will be Charlotte Leisinger’s directing debut at the Rep but over the past seven years Rep audiences have become very familiar with her achievements as an actor on the Repertory stage. In 2004 alone, she was acclaimed for her portrayal of a beleaguered mother whose son was on death row in the play, Unspoken Prayers. She followed that with a comical portrayal of a feisty old political activist living in the Harvest Moon Retirement Home who advocated causes and orgasms. The play was the first on the present season, Coming to life.

Charlotte has cast two familiar and beloved Repertory actors who will perform together for the very first time. Natalie Chillis who will portray the security guard in Byrd’s Boy returned to the Rep stage last fall after a prolonged maternity leave. She re-won our hearts with her frustrated attempts to tame five feisty old retired ladies in Coming to Life.

B.J. Love has the role of the hallucinatory, sometimes comical, sometimes sad, homeless old man who sets up housekeeping in warehouse. B. J. was voted the Detroit Repertory Theatre Subscriber Best Supporting Actor for the 2003/04 season for his portrayal of Morgan, the loyal companion of his brain damaged friend, in The Drawer Boy.
